What To Know About Buying Cabinets

Jim

"Cabinets add both form and function to a room and can be a wonderful focal point if executed well—so getting the design right is key to a successful project."

- Jim Coshow

When it comes to cabinets, our very own Eric Jaeger is one of the best resources out there. A former contractor, Eric has experience on both the installation and design sides of cabinet projects and offers a unique perspective to both homeowners and professionals. In this series, we sit down with Eric to learn more about the cabinet ordering process from design to project completion—and the do's and don’ts in between. In today’s episode, we’re talking about how to start a successful cabinet project and the design resources available to you at Dunn Lumber.

Well-crafted cabinetry adds beauty and functionality to your space—and no matter the size or scope of your project, successful cabinet design and installation all starts with proper planning and having a trusted consultant by your side.

Where’s the best place to start when buying cabinets?

With so many combinations of cabinet styles and colors, it can be hard to know where to start. Whether you know exactly what you want or don't know where to begin, working with one of our trusted cabinet designers will help you understand your options and help bring overall efficiency to your project. Our designers will work with you to get a sense of your room (or rooms), show you what cabinet styles and colors are available, and provide you with literature and the appropriate samples.

How long does the first cabinet design appointment last?

Depending on the complexity of your project, the initial design appointment can last from one to three hours. To ensure your designer has enough time allocated to best serve you, we recommend making an appointment at your nearest Dunn Cabinet Showroom.

What should I expect during a cabinet design appointment, and how can I prepare?

Before meeting with the designer, it’s important to get an idea of the dimensions of your space. You’ll want to measure the length of your walls and the height of your ceiling with reasonable accuracy. Don't sweat absolute precision here—within an inch is OK for the design phase. Be sure to measure around openings like windows and doors so your design specialist can get a sense of the actual wall space available.

Once you’ve taken your measurements, make a rough sketch of your room. Note where the window and door openings are (include any casing moulding), the height of your ceiling, and any existing appliance locations. Again, this doesn’t have to be too precise, so don’t worry about drawing to scale.

What if I don’t know what I want?

If you don’t have a vision yet for your new space, that’s OK—it’s why we’re here! Bring your measurements and sketches and we’ll show you the possibilities. Our cabinet designers have several years of experience designing cabinet layouts and working with contractors and are here to assist you no matter where you’re at in your project.

What happens after a cabinet design appointment?

As quickly as possible after your first appointment, your designer will share initial drawings and renderings to give you a more accurate idea of your cabinet layout. A second appointment may be advised to fine-tune your choices before finalizing your design and placing your order.

If I’m a contractor, can I send my clients to Dunn to work with a cabinet specialist?

Yes! Our designers work with contractors regularly. We’re proud to provide design services that allow contractors to cut down on overhead and homeowners to get involved in the design of their space. We work together with contractors throughout the design process to confirm measurements and cross-check information before finalizing designs and placing orders.
