Outdoor living is bigger and better today than it used to be. Home renovation shows and the popularity of DIY home projects have brought more focus to outdoor living over the years, in turn growing the physical footprint of our outdoor living areas. In the 1970s, the typical deck size was around 8 feet by 12 feet; today, our average outdoor living areas have grown to 500 square feet and only get bigger from there. From full-size kitchens to living rooms with televisions and fireplaces, there’s not much from the indoor living experience that you can’t adapt for outside.
Every great outdoor living space starts with a good plan and a solid foundation—which is what this series of videos is all about. Over the next 12 episodes, we’ll sit down with our good friend Kevin Kunka of Trex Company to cover some of the ins and outs of executing a successful decking project. Trex is the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking products and a veteran in the outdoor living industry.
Our companies have worked together on many decks and outdoor living projects—both challenging and smooth—and have shared conversations over the years about the best approach to a deck project. We produced this series as a place to gather our collective industry knowledge to share with you.
In this series, we do our best to cover the agreed-upon best practices when working with manufactured decking products—from paying attention to the installation manuals to understanding the different types of fasteners and fascia installation methods. We hope our discussions will help you understand some of the key components when installing manufactured decking, so your finished product can provide the joy and longevity you envision.
